The power of suggestion and mental imagery is often overlooked by physicians; however, it can be of great assistance to those suffering from degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
The word "arthritis" derives from the Greek words artron, joint, and itis, inflammation. In other words, arthritis literally means "inflammation of the joints."
As the subconscious controls all circulatory, muscular, chemical, and hormonal actions, hypnosis can also direct the production of chondrocytes, promoting the growth of new, healthy cartilage. The more protection in the joints, the more comfort and mobility are created.
Hypnosis can also be used to regulate the flow and distribution of endorphins, which are the "feel-good" chemicals the body uses to create comfort and relaxation. Using hypnosis to regulate endorphin production plays a significant role in putting the client in control.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation of the lining, or synovium, of the joints. This disease can lead to long-term joint damage, resulting in chronic pain, loss of function, and the possibility of total disability. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) progresses in three distinct stages. The first stage of the disease is swelling of the synovial lining. This swelling causes pain, heat, stiffness, redness, and swelling around the joint. The second stage is the rapid division and growth of cells, or pannus, causing thickening of the synovium. In the third stage, inflamed cells release enzymes that can digest bones and cartilage. When this happens, it can cause the affected joint to lose its shape and alignment. This leads to more pain associated with the loss of movement.
The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. However, it is believed that there is no exact cause for this disease. Researchers are now debating whether RA is a single disease or several different diseases that share common characteristics. It is known that the body's immune system plays a significant role in rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, RA is referred to as an autoimmune disease because people with RA exhibit an abnormal immune system response. In a normal and healthy immune system, white blood cells produce antibodies that protect the body against foreign substances. People with RA have an immune system that confuses healthy body tissue with a foreign invader and attacks it.
Rheumatoid arthritis manifests in many different ways. This means that medical treatment needs to be tailored to the individual. To do this, it is necessary to consider the severity of arthritis, other medical conditions that may be present, and lifestyle. Current treatment methods focus on relieving pain, reducing inflammation, halting or slowing joint damage, and improving the body's ability to function properly, helping to develop and maintain a sense of well-being.
Arthritis has more than 100 forms and is a very common cause of physical disability. There is no cure for arthritis, but there are available treatments that can alleviate pain and help the patient remain active. Additionally, how a person deals with arthritis can depend greatly on behavior and attitude. If real efforts are made to actively control arthritis, then it is possible to gain some control over the pain.
Hypnotherapy and Arthritis
Studies have been conducted involving hypnotherapy and arthritis. In one study, correlations were found between pain levels, anxiety, and depression, and after hypnotherapy, there were clinically and statistically significant reductions in pain, anxiety, and depression, and increases in beta-endorphin-like immunoreactive material. This reveals that hypnotherapy can play a significant role in overcoming the painful symptoms associated with arthritis.
A dramatic case was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association of a 10-year-old girl diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who responded minimally to large doses of aspirin and physiotherapy over a period of 7 weeks. Doctors decided to try hypnotherapy, and 4 hours after her second session, the girl was able to ride a bike and felt no pain. Two additional booster sessions were given, and the girl remained well for the three years until the time of the report.
Research conducted by Gay, Philippot, and Luminet showed that hypnotherapy was effective in treating pain caused by osteoarthritis. The study showed that hypnosis is effective, as it reduced over 50% of osteoarthritic pain after only four weeks of treatment. This reduction was maintained up to the 6-month follow-up.
With the help of hypnotherapy, the client can gain a distinct advantage in control and, in some cases, even in the reversal of arthritis limitations. Treatment should include the application of self-hypnosis. Some sessions here at GMO initiate the treatment, and with the assistance of audio recordings and self-hypnosis, the client can begin to make healthy and truly positive changes in their life.
Hypnotherapy is a natural therapy without side effects and is an effective tool to use as part of your chronic pain management plan.
